Christmas markets Madrid 2025: routes, dates & a ham-friendly plan

A Madrid tradition that lights up every December

When the holidays arrive, Madrid transforms: twinkling lights, music, the smell of roasted chestnuts… and Christmas markets. Set up across the city’s iconic squares and boulevards, these festive markets combine tradition, shopping, a magical atmosphere, and — often — a great chance to pick up meaningful gifts.

From nativity figurines to handmade ornaments, sweets and toys, the Christmas markets in Madrid are the perfect excuse to stroll through the city, discover charming corners, and embrace the festive spirit.

And if you add a stop at Museo del Jamón, the walk becomes a complete holiday plan.

Dates and typical opening hours

Although each market follows its own calendar, most of them open in late November and run until January 6 or 7. Usual hours are from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with extended opening on weekends and reduced hours on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

We always recommend checking the exact dates and times a few days before your visit.

Walking routes from Museo del Jamón: must-see Christmas markets

1) Plaza Mayor: Madrid’s most iconic Christmas market

Just steps away from our Museo del Jamón at Plaza Mayor, this market is one of the most beloved. Over 100 stalls offer Christmas decorations, nativity figures, festive hats, joke gifts and more. It’s the perfect place to soak in the classic holiday vibe of the old town.

Tip: start your walk with a beer and a plate of ham at our Plaza Mayor location, then head straight into the market.

2) Paseo de Recoletos: for true artisan gifts

Leaving from our location on Paseo del Prado, walk towards Cibeles and you’ll reach the Recoletos Artisan Market. Known for its authenticity and craftsmanship, you’ll find pottery, leather goods, jewellery, woodwork and more — all handmade.

Perfect for finding one-of-a-kind gifts.

3) Plaza de Colón: Christmas magic for families

Close to Recoletos and the Prado–Castellana area, this market has featured an ice rink, music, and family-friendly activities in recent years. A great spot for walking with children, enjoying a warm drink, and continuing your Christmas stroll.

4) Plaza de España: La Navideña

One of the city’s biggest and most complete Christmas setups. It includes all kinds of stalls, seasonal food, children’s activities, an ice rink and plenty of lights and music. If you want to dedicate a whole afternoon to holiday vibes, this is the place.

Just a 10-minute walk from our Museo del Jamón on Gran Vía.

Tips to enjoy the Christmas markets like a local

  • Avoid peak hours: weekends and evenings get very crowded. Visit early in the day or midweek for a calmer experience.
  • Dress warm and walk-ready: most markets are outdoors.
  • Use public transport: the city centre often restricts car access in December.
  • Take a ham break: after walking and shopping, a warm stop with good ham and wine is always welcome.
