When is the best time to buy Iberian ham?

Buying Iberian ham isn’t just about taste—it’s about knowing when and how to choose the right piece. At Museo del Jamón, with over 45 years sharing our passion for Iberian products, we know every season brings its advantages.

Whether you’re shopping for your household, a special event, or a gift, timing your purchase well can make all the difference. Let’s explore when and how to buy the best Iberian ham for every occasion.

The ham calendar: when is it cheaper?

Although Iberian ham is produced and cured year-round, there are key moments when buying is more affordable:

  • After Christmas (January and February): Prices often drop after the holiday rush, making this a great time to find quality Iberian hams at discounted prices.
  • Before summer (May and June): Promotions often appear before vacation season—perfect timing for buying pre-sliced ham for trips or informal meals.
  • Black Friday and special events: Museo del Jamón occasionally offers exclusive deals. Sign up for our newsletter or follow us on social media to stay informed.

High-demand periods: shop early

  • Christmas and year-end holidays: Demand peaks. We recommend shopping early, especially if you’re looking for a premium ham like the 100% Iberian Acorn-Fed Ham (7–7.5 kg).
  • Easter and regional holidays: These occasions also see increased ham consumption. The 75% Iberian Acorn-Fed Ham (9.5–10 kg) is perfect for family gatherings.
  • Corporate gifting and events: Ham is a popular corporate gift. For excellent quality and value, consider the 50% Iberian Acorn-Fed Ham (8–8.5 kg).

Whole leg or pre-sliced? The best option by season

  • Spring-summer: Vacuum-packed pre-sliced hams stay fresh and are ideal for travel or light meals. Try our 50% Iberian Field-Fed Ham, pre-sliced (100 g).
  • Fall-winter: Cooler weather is perfect for buying whole legs. Once opened, they keep better, and are great for holiday meals and gatherings.

At Museo del Jamón, you can also buy whole hams sliced by hand and vacuum-packed for the best of both worlds.

How to store your ham if bought early

If you’re buying in advance, follow these tips to preserve flavor and quality:

  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, ideally between 15–20 ºC.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Once opened, cover the cut surface with a clean cloth or a piece of fat from the ham.
  • For sliced ham, refrigerate it and let it sit at room temperature for 10–15 minutes before eating.

Where to buy guaranteed Iberian ham?

Buying from trusted stores is key. At Museo del Jamón, you’ll find:

  • Different Iberian breed percentages: 50%, 75%, and 100%.
